Upcoming design trends for 2019

It can sometimes feel a little overwhelming trying to keep your finger on the pulse when it comes to fashion and design. 2019 is just around the corner and promising exciting quirks, dreamy patterns and the power of handmade – here’s a snapshot of what to expect:

One of my favourite trends set to hit the shops next year is comfort. It sounds silly that this wouldn’t always be front of mind when buying for your home, but in the quest to be ahead of the curve, people have been known to pick items that look good, but don’t necessarily scream comfort. From softer carpets to enviable sofas, comfort is money well spent and will be at the centre of house decoration next year.

Our comfort obsession extends to the bedroom too, with the four-poster bed making a strong comeback. It’s a bold look and while an elegant addition to the right room, can also feel a little cumbersome. If you’re after the grandeur, but want a slightly less invasive alternative, the King Size Divan Bed from the Divan Beds Centre is a good place to start.

Once you’ve decided on your bed and furnishings, it’s all about the material. 2019 is demanding sustainability and handmade pieces by the bucket load! It might sound a little alien now but be prepared to see an influx of items made with sustainable materials such as clay, rice paper and jute. And aside from their sustainability credentials, handmade items will introduce a more sensual feeling in the home; a way to feel more in touch with the earth.

Stormy colours really shook up the design world this year and 2019 looks set to build on this but take things up a level. From emerald greens and bold indigos, expect to see rooms screaming drama with contrasting colour palettes reaching furniture, paint and accessories.

How things look is of course paramount, but how they feel can be the difference between a show room and a home. One trend that is taking new heights is a particularly sumptuous fabric; velvet. Adding a chic, sophisticated feel to any room, it is a natural companion of all things dark and stormy.

Complementing these tones and taking its inspiration from the sky, is 2019’s obsession with constellations. From zodiac patterned murals, subtle hints on kitchenware or cosmic tile work, astronomy is a design trend that will take you out of your comfort zone, and into a whole new universe.

Last but not least is a trend that all green-fingered, outdoorsy people will immediately fall in love with – the green leafy wall. It’s a craze that has seen hotels, restaurants, bars and retail spaces get their creative hats on to find ways of creating a space that brings the outside in. It’s an incredibly striking design, being described as ‘growing up’ when you can’t grow out. While a wall of foliage might sound a little strange, it’s actually a wonderful way to introduce some plant heaven into your home – if nothing else, it’s a brilliant talking point!
